Jan Bednarek believes his move from Southampton to Porto was “destiny”, as the Polish defender prepares to make his 400th professional appearance this week against Nottingham Forest in the Europa League.
Speaking to UEFA’s official magazine, the 29-year-old reflected on his journey and growing role at the Portuguese club.
“I think I was destined to come to FC Porto, and I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “We want to bring FC Porto back to where it belongs. At the top.”
Bednarek has been a standout performer since joining from Southampton last summer, starting all 11 games so far this season. He’s the only player in the squad with that record.
His composure and leadership have made him a key figure in Francesco Farioli’s defence, forming a solid partnership with fellow Pole Jakub Kiwior.
“When the team is struggling and needs more control, I feel I can help the younger players,” he added. “They need someone to guide, support and inspire them, and I try to bring that mentality on the pitch.”
After 254 matches for Southampton and a brief loan at Aston Villa, Bednarek is now enjoying his first taste of European competition. “It’s amazing to play European nights at 29,” he said. “Sometimes I think about the future, and it looks very bright.”
The defender, under contract until 2029, also revealed his efforts to adapt off the pitch. “I want to learn Portuguese out of respect for my teammates and the club,” he admitted. “I already know an important word: ‘ganhar’ [win]. Even if I make mistakes, I’m trying to break the language barrier.”
