Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez has given a new interview to the Argentine press, with Olé highlighting the goalkeeper’s confident outlook ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

He spoke quickly to journalist Christian Martin under the Midlands’ rain, with the pair joking about it being non-stop recently. The Aston Villa No. 1 made it clear he expects to reach the tournament in stronger condition than in 2022.

Martínez first assessed Argentina’s group, which includes Algeria, Austria and Jordan. He noted that thier draw was good and said the first matches will be nice, before reminding: “It’s still a World Cup. The knockout rounds are always tough.”

He then reacted to the possibility of facing Spain or Uruguay in the round of 32, saying this extra match “will be a good one”.

The Aston Villa keeper also stressed that he feels physically stronger than he did in Qatar. He told the channel: “Physically I feel perfect, I’m good. I have no doubts that I can have a great World Cup. I’m going to feel better in this one, I really think so, I will be better.”

The goalkeeper remains one of Argentina’s most reliable figures. He was recently rested for a fixture, and whilst there were claims about him being dropped, those were wildly incorrect and it had all been confirmed in Argentina weeks prior.

After a summer of doubts around his Aston Villa future, and having to rebuild trust with the fans, it’s unclear what else will come at the end of the season.
