A comment from Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha on social media hasn’t gone down well with a section of AS Roma supporters after the Red Devils came from behind to secure a 3-2 win over the Italian club on Wednesday.
The result also helped the Red Devils end their nine-match winless streak. This includes two defeats in the Champions League to Atlético Madrid and Como.
Manchester United were 2-0 down after 17 minutes against the Serie A side before their comeback in the second half.
Cunha key for Manchester United win
The 27-year-old forward went down inside the box in the second half, resulting in a penalty. Bruno Fernandes converted it in the 58th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Matheus Cunha capitalised on AS Roma centre-back Leonardo Balerdi’s error to score the equaliser in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later, the Brazil international became a hero by scoring the winner for Manchester United.
After the match, the Roma defender took to Instagram to share a post over his disappointment about the Champions League defeat. Balerdi said the loss “hurts”, and Cunha commented “Crack” on the same post.
Corriere dello Sport says that this drove a section of the Serie A side’s supporters to ‘go wild’ on Instagram. The newspaper questions whether it was a ‘praise or mockery? That is the question. But Roma fans certainly didn’t take it well.’
The reaction from the Roma fans, on social media, looks like they felt it was mockery.
It’s worth noting that in South America, ‘crack’ or ‘craque’ is generally praising someone. Maybe, the Italian newspaper could have explained this to their Italian readers and Roma supporters.
Roma win best day for Brazilian star
Matheus Cunha arrived at Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2025, and the Red Devils didn’t play in Europe in his debut season. The Brazilian said the win over Roma was the best match at Old Trafford so far.
He said: “Yeah, absolutely. I think, honestly, it was my day. I was actually talking about this earlier. And I think it was my most beautiful personal moment at this stadium.”
“I think the game against Arsenal was a really beautiful moment too, when we won there during a difficult period of the season. And I think a game like this can be the moment that changes everything, you know?”
“It can be that game we needed, that emotion the supporters will feel, that atmosphere we’ve always wanted to create here.”
“And, well, we’re ready for it. I think responsibility is a wonderful thing. There are so many other difficult responsibilities in the world, and to have something as wonderful as this makes me happy. I’m happy I was able to deliver.”
