Manchester United are threating Sevilla to sign Youssouf Fofana in January by holding direct talks with AC Milan.

In January, Manchester United parted ways with Ruben Amorim and appointed Michael Carrick as his successor.

Amorim returned to the bench when Milan appointed him in the summer. He didn’t include Fofana in his core plans this season and the manager’s rejection allowed the La Liga side to sign the midfielder on loan on deadline day.

He arrived at the Andalusian club after a frustrating 2025/26 season under Massimiliano Allegri. Fofana enjoyed a good start in Spain, playing 276 minutes from four matches for the Andalusian club. That seems to have caught the Premier League side’s attention.

Manchester United moving forward

Last weekend, Sport Witness covered a report from Spain that the Red Devils’ scouts are closely following Youssouf Fofana in Sevilla’s home and away matches.

The Old Trafford club want to take the next step and Vamos Mi Sevilla FC now cover the latest. The 27-year-old’s ‘immediate breakthrough’ at the Spanish club has ‘completely convinced’ the English club’s officials.

Manchester United are preparing to ‘submit a substantial financial offer’ directly to AC Milan in the winter market. There’s no mention of the fee they are willing to propose or about the Serie A side’s request.

Sevilla haven’t secured a purchase option or obligation as part of the loan deal. This allows the Rossoneri to cut short his stay in January, by offering compensation to the La Liga side.

For now, Sevilla are calm and will continue to bet on the Frenchman, at least until the end of this year. The situation may change if there’s an offer in January.

Our take: Manchester United interest not making sense

Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba were the three midfielders to arrive at Old Trafford in the summer window.

Besides the trio, Michael Carrick has Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Tyler Fletcher and Bruno Fernandes as other midfielders. Manuel Ugarte is recovering from a serious injury suffered during the World Cup.

In short, the midfield position is covered even if one of them were to leave in the next window.

Therefore, it would make no sense for Manchester United to pursue Youssouf Fofana when other areas need strengthening. However, that doesn’t seem to stop the Spanish media from discussing their interest.
