Manchester United are tracking Sevilla’s Youssouf Fofana closely in Spain, after including him in their transfer target list.

The Frenchman’s good start to the season with the La Liga side has resulted in growing interest from several clubs, including Manchester United.

Manchester United scouting Fofana

On summer deadline day, the Andalusian club signed the 27-year-old from AC Milan on a season-long loan deal.

He had a frustrating 2025/26 season under Massimiliano Allegri and didn’t convince his successor, Ruben Amorim, during the pre-season. Therefore, the Serie A side sent him out on loan to Spain.

Prior to his move to Sevilla, the Rossoneri were reportedly hoping for Hull City to secure Youssouf Fofana’s services.

As a part of the loan agreement with Milan, Fichero states the Spanish club are paying 8% of his €9m per year salary. The two clubs haven’t confirmed about a purchase obligation or an option.

Fofana has scored one goal from 276 minutes from four matches so far. Sevilla manager Luis García Plaza has utilised him as a defensive, central and an attacking midfielder so far.

His impressive start to life in Spain has led to the possibility of Sevilla retaining him after his loan spell. That won’t be easy, mainly because of the finances and Manchester United’s interest.

The Red Devils have sent their scouts to follow the player live in action for the Spanish club’s both home and away matches. Besides them, unnamed Bundesliga sides are also tracking him.

Milan, for their part, have set a €20m price. His €9m per year salary, price and interest from Manchester United and others make it complicated for Sevilla to buy Fofana. This puts them in dilemma, which favours the Red Devils and his other suitors.

Manchester United likely used to create hype

Michael Carrick’s side signed four new players in the summer, including Karl Darlow, who arrived as a free agent. The other three were midfielders, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba.

The midfielder is covered by the trio and others. The Old Trafford club have to improvise other areas of the pitch. Taking this into account, it’s highly unlikely Manchester United will make advances to sign Youssouf Fofana.

There’s a possibility of using the English club to create a hype, increase his price or both.
