After an impressive World Cup campaign, Djed Spence could be looking to leave Tottenham Hotspur. Inter Milan have now stepped forward for his signature.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered how the Nerazzurri see the full-back as a key target to replace Denzel Dumfries. A move for Anan Khalaili failed due to medical reasons, right after Chelsea swooped in late for Marco Palestra.
Inter feel Spence is a more accessible option and will not cost much more than both their former targets.
Now, formal talks between the two clubs have started.
Player could be interested
A report about the situation from Corriere dello Sport starts with ‘London calling’, as it goes on to report talks between Inter and Tottenham.
It was the Nerazzurri who approached Spurs, enquiring about Spence’s availability. The London side responded by trying to include Cristian Romero in discussions but Inter believe signing the Argentina international would be quite complex. A move for him would only be possible if Spurs agree to loan him out but doesn’t seem to be happening right now.
Spence is also expensive but he is a bit more affordable than Romero. Besides, Inter are much more desperate to strengthen at wing-back than centre-back.
The newspaper believe his cost can reach €40m, which is more than what Khalaili was going to cost. Inter haven’t given up though.
As far as Correire dello Sport are concerned, Spence would be interested in a move to Inter, having previously played in Serie A with Genoa. He is a more important target than Romero and there is a chance talks between the two clubs could continue.
Alfredo Pedulla adds information of his own, clarifying that Tottenham don’t see Spence as an unsellable asset.
Our take: Tottenham in no rush
Inter will likely keep exploring the market for other options as they usually want cost-effective targets. That shouldn’t bother Tottenham, who know that Spence could yet attract other Premier League clubs.
He has done enough at the World Cup for that and this will help Spurs elevate their valuation further.
Even if no suitors step forward for him, it won’t be a massive problem. The 25-year-old can fill into multiple positions and Tottenham have seen that in the last two seasons. That is why keeping him beyond this summer won’t be a bad idea.
