Gustaf Lagerbielke is rapidly rebuilding his reputation after leaving Celtic, with his performances in Portugal drawing praise for their consistency and authority.
According to O Jogo, the Swedish centre-back is on course to reach 40 appearances in his debut season at Braga, underlining how important he has become for his current side. The report describes him as an “imperial defender”, highlighting the level he has reached since moving on from Celtic.
Lagerbielke arrived in Portugal following spells at Celtic and FC Twente. While his time in Scotland offered exposure at a major European club, the move south has provided him with the regular minutes that have helped stabilise his development.
This season has seen him emerge as one of the most used players in the squad. He operates as a central figure in a three-man defence and has quickly become a pillar of the team’s structure. His calm distribution – both short and long – and his defensive solidity have made him one of the manager’s most trusted options.
The 25-year-old has also delivered decisive moments since leaving Celtic behind. Earlier in the campaign, he played a key role in a victory over Sporting. In stoppage time, he was fouled inside the penalty area, allowing Rodrigo Zalazar to convert the winning spot-kick.
Beyond defensive work, Lagerbielke remains a threat from set pieces. His aerial ability and physical presence make him a regular target during corners and wide free-kicks.
Swedish perspective on his development
Former Braga striker Stefan Schwarz Eskilsson, who follows the Portuguese league closely, recently watched Lagerbielke in action and came away impressed.
“I saw some of his games because I also watch Braga matches,” he explained. “I was even at the stadium for the derby against Vitoria Guimaraes.”
From what he observed, the Swedish defender has taken clear steps forward since leaving Celtic.
“I saw a solid and stable performance. He is a great defender who doesn’t make mistakes. He is very secure in his game,” Eskilsson said.
The former striker also highlighted the physical and tactical qualities that define Lagerbielke’s style.
“He combines the physical component – he is very tall, physical and aggressive. But he also reads the game very well. He is an intelligent player.”
What happens next
Lagerbielke’s consistent minutes have also helped him gain ground in the Sweden national team setup, where competition for centre-back places remains strong.
Eskilsson believes the defender’s trajectory since leaving Celtic reflects the value of playing regularly at a high level. And Lagerbielke himself is enjoying life in Portugal.
“He has improved compared to previous seasons and is now playing in a better league than those in the Netherlands and Scotland,” he said.
With 39 appearances already this season, the Swedish defender looks set to continue building momentum – and his post-Celtic chapter is starting to look like the most stable period of his career so far.
