Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto came off the bench in Italy’s 2-1 defeat to England on Thursday.
Prior to the clash, the forward admitted it was special for him to face the Three Lions since he is currently playing for the Whites. He wasn’t able to make a difference to the final scoreline as first half goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane saw England clinch a victory.
Rai Sport spoke to the Leeds player to get his views on the match and his comments are relayed Calciomercato.it.
“It was a difficult game, they are an excellent team with many quality players. We suffered in the first half, but in the second half we showed we were up to it,” he said.
“I was expecting this kind of game. They are one of the best formations in the world, with a little luck we would have deserved more.”
Leeds signed the 19-year-old from FC Zürich towards the end of last summer. He’s managed two goals and three assists from 16 matches since making his league debut last October.
Earlier this week, Gnonto admitted he’s living a dream at Leeds. Speaking to Rai Sport, the Italy international has once again expressed his delight over joining the Whites.
“I made this type of choice, I’m happy and I proved to be a good player. I think I can do even better,” Gnonto explained.
Italy face Malta this weekend and Gnonto’s immediate focus is on the Azzurri’s upcoming tie.
“We go there on Sunday to try to win. We have no other choices. If we show what we are and play the game of the second half [the way they played against England], we will have no problems,” the Leeds attacker concluded.
