Celtic and Rangers were competing for Fares Ghedjemis in the summer. The player has now opened up on what went down during the window.
Sport Witness have tracked how the Hoops initially stepped forward for the Algerian in January. The player turned the move down, even if Frosinone were ready to accept an offer.
In the summer, things took a bit of a turn. Rangers joined Celtic in the hunt and both clubs made offers for the signing. The attacker then seemed keen on leaving Frosinone and was even out of their squad early in the season.
His exit didn’t materialise, as the Italian side stood firm. Now that he is back in the first-team fold, Ghedjemis has revealed how things unfolded.
Player wanted exit
Frosinone take on Sassuolo this week in Serie A and the Algerian was involved in the pre-game press conference on Thursday.
He was asked about a host of things regarding his exit and the 24-year-old was quite frank.
Ghedjemis said – via TMW: “It’s over. I had my ambition, but I spoke to the club and they presented me with their new ambition of becoming a major club. I’m happy to have stayed and signed a new contract. Now I want to do well.”
As well as Celtic and Rangers, Monaco and Besiktas were also keen on the Algeria international. He further clarified that manager Max Alvini was key in convincing him to stay.
“There are so many people who made me want to stay. I thank the coach, who spoke to me so much and always made the difference between the man and the player.”
“I thank the president and director Castagnini. I want to have a great season for the entire city and for everyone.”
Ghedjemis also thanked the fans, who have always been behind him despite the summer speculation.
“I thank the fans for the love they show me. I want to thank them for this and for their daily support. My teammates have given me so much love and have been there for me during the transfer window.”
Decision to pay off
The winger could’ve played in Europe, if he joined Celtic or Rangers. Frosinone would be unlikely to do that, even if they are trying to become regulars in Serie A. But staying at Frosinone allows him to make a mark in the Italian top-flight.
This will allow him to earn a big move to major Serie A sides, who can pay more than the Scottish clubs.
He can then play in Europe and later become a star for the national team.
