Willian’s first appearance for Grêmio could not have come in a bigger setting, and the former Fulham man delivered.

The 37-year-old midfielder made his debut in Gre-Nal derby and immediately won over the fans, creating the move for the first goal and providing the assist for the second in a 3-2 victory over Internacional.

Wearing the number 88 shirt, Willian was one of the most talked-about players after the match by the local press. Even an opposition supporter approached him for a photo and his shirt, a gesture that caused some tension among fellow Inter fans but highlighted the veteran’s impact.

A few stats underlined his influence: 62 minutes played, one assist, 25 of 26 passes completed (96% accuracy), two key passes, and one big chance created. After not featuring since Fulham’s 3-1 defeat to Everton in May, Grêmio admitted he is still not at full fitness, but his debut already proved decisive.

Head coach Mano Menezes was full of praise, saying: “Willian needs no comment. We did the minimum to get him ready, because everyone knows the level of player we’re talking about.”

While Willian shone, another Fulham connection finally had his breakthrough. Striker Carlos Vinícius ended a 18-month goal drought by scoring Grêmio’s equaliser in the first half, his first strike since netting for Galatasaray in March 2024.

Together, the former Fulham duo were at the heart of Grêmio’s derby win, sparking immediate excitement about what they can deliver in Brazil.
