Gianluigi Donnarumma’s agent, Enzo Raiola, has insisted it is all calm at Manchester City despite the Premier League’s guilty verdict.
Enzo Maresca’s side were found guilty of all 115 charges put to them by the Premier League during the international break.
The Premier League have accused them of ‘sham’ financial arrangements over an extended period, intended to accelerate the club’s growth and transform them into Premier League and European contenders.
Manchester City have appealed the charges, insisting that they have irrefutable evidence to dispel the Premier League’s claims. That appeal is now being worked on after being lodged last week.
Sanctions likely on the way
In the meantime, the discourse is focused on potential sanctions. Given the nature of the charges, fans and pundits alike are calling for Manchester City to punished in both sporting, and financial terms.
That’s already led to claims that titles should be stripped and for the club to be relegated down the divisions. That has already got some players, like former defender Manuel Akanji, concerned.
But Raiola insists that for now, there is an air of calm around the Etihad. Donnarumma, for his part, is not worried just yet.
“Could the chaos at Manchester City change anything? No, it won’t change a thing for us or for Gigio,” he told Il Napolista.
“Stories pop up from time to time. The club has spoken to Gigio, and everyone is calm.
“There are important matches coming up against Liverpool and PSG, and the sporting justice process will take its course. But Gigio has received assurances from Manchester City.”
Manchester City confidence
What those reassurances are from Manchester City, remains to be seen. It is very unlikely that they will be made public any time soon, if ever.
They, of course, have maintained their innocence and insisted that they can prove the allegations against them to be false. Perhaps that is where the confidence and reassurances are now coming from.
Whether anyone buys that everything is calm, is another matter. From the outside looking in, it appears to be anything but calm. Constant reassurances that it won’t change that perception.
