Ipswich Town have joined Aston Villa in the race to sign Toulouse FC goalkeeper Guillaume Restes this summer.

Two days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from France that Aston Villa reached a verbal agreement with the 21-year-old. A move would depend on Emiliano Martínez leaving the Premier League side.

The Europa League winners will have to be wary of competition from Ipswich Town and Napoli.

Aston Villa and Ipswich Town make approaches

That’s according to L’Equipe, who cover the latest on the two English clubs and the Serie A side.

The newspaper today focuses on players who can leave the Ligue 1 side and Guillaume Restes’ case is the most advanced. He’s attracting interest from Unai Emery’s side, Ipswich Town and Napoli.

These three clubs have started discussions with Toulouse over a potential move for the stopper.

The French club haven’t received any concrete bids and won’t entertain offers ‘starting with a 1’. In other words, they need at least €20m to sanction his sale.

Restes is ready to take the next step in this window, and the sporting aspect will weigh heavily on his final decision.

Aston Villa project could be convincing

Ipswich Town, who returned to the top flight, have recently appointed Gary O’Neil as Kieran McKenna’s successor.

The newspaper says pressure at the newly promoted Premier League side would be less than at Aston Villa or Napoli.

These two clubs have qualified for the Champions League, but their situations are totally opposite.

Napoli parted ways with Antonio Conte and are likely to appoint Massimiliano Allegri as his successor. There are expectations for Vanja Milinković-Savić to leave this summer while there’s uncertainty around Alex Meret’s future at Napoli.

Unai Emery has long been in charge at Villa Park and has led them to Europa League success. The France U21 international could be Aston Villa’s No.1, especially if Emiliano Martínez were to leave.

Having reached a verbal agreement, Aston Villa could make progress to sign Guillaume Restes if and when they conclude the Argentine’s sale.
