Chivas de Guadalajara have no intention of signing West Ham United‘s Edson Álvarez or offering him an escape route away from the Championship side in January.
The Mexico international has endured a difficult spell with the Hammers this season. Last season, he was on loan at Fenerbahçe, where he struggled with form and fitness.
Therefore, the Turkish club didn’t make his stay permanent, and he returned to West Ham in the summer. The 28-year-old wasn’t keen on playing in the Championship and had options to leave.
However, he didn’t leave the London club, where Nuno Espírito Santo hasn’t included him in his core plans. The midfielder played 75 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Portsmouth on August 8th.
That was his only appearance of this season, and the manager left him out of the squad since then.
West Ham exit likely in January
The midfielder’s contract with the English club is until 2028, but could leave as early as January 2027.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered a report from Mexico explaining that Nuno Espírito Santo’s decision to not utilise this season could force him out of West Ham United in the winter market.
The latest reports state Chivas as an option for Edson Álvarez. Claro Sports journalist José María Garrido wastes no time to dismiss it and Rebaño Pasión have relayed his comments.
“Edson Álvarez’s name has started circulating in connection with a move to Chivas,” he said.
“In the case of ‘El Machín’ (Álvarez’s nickname), he’s fighting for a place at West Ham, but being in this league comes from a difficult period because during his previous stint with Fenerbahçe…”
“Does Edson Álvarez really have a chance of joining Chivas? As of today, October 22nd, zero, none. Because of his history with Club América and, above all, because although he’s an experienced player, Chivas currently has a surplus of midfielders.”
West Ham player favours Europe stay
Edson Álvarez graduated from Club América’s academy and spent three years with their first team before leaving them for Ajax in 2019. Their local rivals are Chivas, who already have several options in the midfield.
Therefore, Chivas are unlikely to sign him in January. Even if they were keen, the former Ajax man wouldn’t have accepted a move.
Last month, there were reports linking him to Club América. At that time, we relayed news he has no intention of returning to Mexico and wants to continue in Europe.
Álvarez’s situation at West Ham United, barring any surprises, is unlikely to improve soon. Therefore, he could push for an exit when the transfer window reopens in January.
