Harry Winks is currently thriving at Serie A side Cagliari and the midfielder has now looked back on his spell at Tottenham.
The midfielder has been a regular for the Sardinia side, who have done quite well in the ongoing campaign. Sport Witness have already tracked his progress in Italy, with the player becoming a real leader under Fabio Pisacane.
This is his second stint in Italy, with the first one coming with Sampdoria during his time at Tottenham.
Winks’ career in London didn’t reach heights that some expected it to, but he looks back on things positively.
Player reveals one regret
Winks spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport, for their Friday print edition, in a detailed interview and spoke about how Antonio Conte changed his career.
The Englishman said: “I’ve had many coaches in my career, but he was the first real coach who gave me a different understanding of football, tactically. I got along very well with him.”
The 30-year-old also opened up on how his life revolved around Spurs since he was very young.
“My dad, who now works in security and video surveillance, played in the town where I was born, Hemel Hempstead. I started when I was five.
“He would take me (my mum brings food to the elderly in need) after work, twice a week. Tottenham has been my life. But now I support the team I play for: Cagliari.”
Winks also pointed at a regret involving Spurs’ Champions League final in 2019.
“The outcome was sad, but the experience was fantastic. Especially everything leading up to the match. It was fantastic to play with such extraordinary players.”
The Cagliari star was also asked about Harry Kane and his contention for the Ballon D’or. Winks backed his ex-teammate to win the accolade but revealed that he isn’t the best player he has shared the dressing room with.
“Kane deserves it. He’s an incredible champion with an incredible mentality. He’s worked hard. But the best I’ve played with is Moussa Dembélé, the Belgian. I’ve learned so much from him for my growth.”
Player finally finding stability
Be it at Leicester City or the last few seasons at Tottenham, Winks could never find stability to grow in a positive manner. That held his career back significantly but at Cagliari, there is something different.
Pisacane is coaching a set of young players within a specific system and Winks is the leader of the pack. That is what he needs at this point of his career and he’s stayed away from injuries too.
Winks commands significant authority in the dressing room, which wouldn’t have been possible without his experiences at Tottenham.
