Wout Weghorst’s agent Mithat Halis has revealed he told Galatasaray to sign Wout Weghorst from Burnley in the summer and avoid Wilfried Zaha and Tete.

Halis has been speaking to Radyospor, relayed by Ajansspor, about his client and the move he had tried to set up for him before he eventually ended up at Hoffenheim.

Weghorst joined the German side on loan from Burnley in the summer, with it again made clear that there was no place for him in Vincent Kompany’s plans moving forwards at Turf Moor.

The Dutch striker had spent the previous season on loan at Besiktas and then Manchester United but had returned to Burnley after the latter elected not to sign him on a permanent basis.

He was linked with moves all over Europe and potentially back to Turkey, where he had impressed with Besiktas before he elected to end the move early to secure a move to Manchester United in January.

Galatasaray were one of the options his agent tried to secure, at least according to his agent, who has admitted he tried to talk those in charge into a deal and felt he was close to doing so.

“Wout Weghorst is one of the forwards with a high defensive aspect. I talked to Galatasaray. I told them, ‘Don’t buy Zaha and Tete’, take Weghorst, you won’t have any problems,” he is quoted as saying.

“Weghorst would fill Icardi’s place and 10 Zaha and 20 Tete would be equal. I talked to Okan Buruk about this situation directly and talked to his assistants.

“I talked to Galatasaray managers. They were all positive about Weghorst. But at the last moment they took Zaha and Tete.”
