Liverpool should consider making a move for Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer and bring him to Anfield with Arne Slot.

That’s according to journalist Cristian Willaert, who believes the midfielder “would make Liverpool strong.”

Slot is expected to be confirmed as the new Liverpool manager in due course after the Reds struck a deal with Feyenoord yesterday over a compensation package for the Dutch coach.

They had made their move for him earlier this week as they seek Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, with the German set to depart in the summer.

His arrival is looking likely to be the first step in a major overhaul at Anfield, with many believing there will be a reset of the current squad, perhaps to better fit their new manager.

That could see plenty of his current Feyenoord team linked with a move alongside him, with numerous managers down the years often targeting players they know well when they arrive at a new club.

That’s particularly the case for a manager arriving at a big club like Liverpool, where he will want faces, he knows and trusts around him early on.

And the man Willaert believes he and Liverpool should target is Wieffer, who he thinks would add something to the squad as well.

“I think Wieffer would make Liverpool stronger,” he said.

“If you look at what Liverpool is missing a bit with this new midfield, it is creativity and boys who can play football.

“In the old days they always had ball grabbers who took a lot of danger away from the opponent and they now miss that a bit. Wieffer is one of the best ball conquerors in Europe.”
