Yet to score in the Premier League despite making five appearances, Gianluca Scamacca has proven useful for West Ham United elsewhere.

That’s because the Italian striker, who was signed by the Hammers from Sassuolo for a £32m fee with a lot of expectations, has found the back of the net three times in four Conference League games.

Despite the poor domestic return, his performances elsewhere were enough to earn the West Ham striker a call-up to the national team by Roberto Mancini, even if the the 23-year-old is unlikely to start ahead of Ciro Immobile.

Much like his Premier League record, Scamacca hasn’t scored for Italy to date despite having seven caps, but his national team manager is clearly fond of him, and backs him to eventually succeed both for him and at London Stadium.

Speaking to the press, relayed by La Repubblica, the former Manchester City boss said: “I spoke to Scamacca. He went to a difficult league. I think it will take him some time to adapt. It takes some time to become familiar with the pace of the Premier League, but it is a choice that can help him improve.”

That’s something the West Ham fans will be hoping happens soon enough, as their start to the domestic campaign, like Scamacca’s, has left a lot to be desired.

David Moyes’ side have only won one of their first seven games, drawing another and losing the other five, scoring just three goals and conceding nine.
