Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min is currently with South Korea preparing for the World Cup qualifiers against Singapore and China this month.
On Thursday, the Taegeuk Warriors will take on Singapore and ahead of the clash, the 31-year-old spoke to reporters. His comments are relayed by Yonhap News Agency.
The Tottenham player is of the belief his experience can help the national team qualify for the next World Cup in 2026. At the same time, he has also insisted that he isn’t thinking anything long term just yet.
“I’m just trying to do as much as I can in my current position. I’m not living in the future or the past, I’m living in the present. I’m only thinking about the two games,” he said.
The Spurs attacker has sent a firm message to South Korea’s experienced players to help the national team in the qualifying fixtures.
“The journey to the World Cup is long. There are times when you fall off the good path, and times when you have to go through thorny roads. Experienced players must protect (the team) well. I hope we can go well until the end of the final qualifying round,” Son explained.
The forward has already represented South Korea in the last three World Cups, and has made 10 appearances, managing three goals and an assist in the process.
According to YNA, there were concerns over Son’s fitness after suggestions that he had sustained a groin injury in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. He has dismissed this suggestion and provided a positive update on his fitness.
“When playing a game, you get stepped on or kicked. I kick myself sometimes. Other than not being able to sleep due to jet lag, I’m in good physical condition,” he added.
