During the last international break, Tottenham squad man Kevin Wimmer had an absolute nightmare. Wimmer was deployed at left-back by Austria, something which was described as a ‘failed experiment’ in the Austrian media.

At the time, Wimmer took a great deal of criticism from his home media: ‘…Wimmer was whistled by his own fans when brought off as a substitute against Ireland in a 1-0 defeat yesterday. Taking a kinder approach, Laola say it’s difficult for Wimmer to play in an unusual position, especially given that he’s not getting games with Tottenham, adding the defender was ‘chosen by the audience as a scapegoat.’

The player himself didn’t criticise the choice and as footballers usually do he took the view that he’d take any role in the team and do his best.

Former Austria international Paul Scharner has questioned that and believes Wimmer and others shouldn’t be so quick to go with the tactical choices of manager Marcel Koller.

Austria’s 90 Minuten quote Scharner as saying: “With such experiments, as against Serbia, where Kevin Wimmer was the left-back, Koller doesn’t do anything good for the team and Kevin. But there we are again on the topic that players do not open their mouths and simply honestly proclaim that they cannot play, or want to play, this position.”

Given a lack of football under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, Wimmer was probably just happy to get on the pitch. Perhaps he should ignore Scharner’s advice.
