Following Diego Costa’s admissions he wanted to leave Chelsea last summer to return to Atlético Madrid, the La Liga club’s president, Enrique Cerezo, has since spoken to Radio Marca about the likelihood of a repeat scenario come the end of the season.

He said: “Those who hope despair. We like that all the great players want to return. There’s times when it can happen, and others when it can’t. We never let anyone down. There are things that are impossible, and Diego Costa returning at the moment is impossible.”

Convinced to stay at Stamford Bridge by Antonio Conte following last season’s poor season, the Chelsea striker has returned the Italian manager’s faith by scoring 17 goals in 26 league games this season, as well as assisting his teammates five times, and it’s this importance to the Blues that makes a return to Atlético Madrid difficult.

Cerezo continued: “He belongs to a great club who don’t want to let him go, and because of this, we need to sign someone else.”

However, Atlético Madrid’s president left the door open for a potential future transfer, perhaps when Diego Costa isn’t so in demand, by explaining ‘everyone could return to Atlético because this is their home.”

With this in mind, the fact that Cerezo admitted he would be calling Diego Costa to find out what he had exactly said probably won’t fill Chelsea fans with too much confidence.

Then again, a transfer this summer is still highly unlikely considering the La Liga side are currently under a transfer ban and forbidden to register players for the first half of the 2017-18 season.
