Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer has recently been deployed as a left back for Austria, and whilst the 23 year old has played there before, it was in the German second division with FC Koln.

It’s fair to say Wimmer’s switch hasn’t gone swimmingly and it’s unlikely Mauricio Pochettino is looking on and seeing a possible bench berth for Wimmer because of it.

Austria’s Sport24 say the ‘failed experiment’ has been so bad it could cost manager Marcel Koller his job. They explain the idea has proven to be a ‘disaster’ in practice and ‘the experiment has been a failure since before the Irish game.’

Laola differ slightly, explaining Wimmer was whistled by his own fans when brought off as a substitute against Ireland in a 1-0 defeat yesterday. Taking a kinder approach, Laola say it’s difficult for Wimmer to play in an unusual position, especially given that he’s not getting games with Tottenham, adding the defender was ‘chosen by the audience as a scapegoat.’

Wimmer’s time at left back should probably be coming to an end, but it’s pointed out Koller doesn’t really have a lot of alternatives, so the Tottenham man may well be played there again in the future, and once again end up as the scapegoat should Austria fail.

It’s not a great season so far for Kevin Wimmer.
