Dutch outlet Tubantia had an interview with Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy following their defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup this week.
It turned out that instead of a routine chat, the 26-year-old was actually very sincere about his feelings in that game, claiming it’s been an unique opportunity to play against a team of such quality.
He was then also very open about upcoming opponents Brentford.
Following the 1-0 defeat at Hillsborough, Pelupessy explained that Sheffield Wednesday players didn’t even talk about the loss, as they only had comments to make about the game itself.
“We talked a lot about the details,” Pelupessy told Tubantia. “Those players are so good, not normal. I have talent, but I now know that there is talent on multiple levels.
“I heard the day before the game that I was going to play, I immediately called my father. He doesn’t normally pick up when he is working, but he did now.”
The Dutch player claims he could barely sleep after the match, as Manchester City have been the hardest team he’s ever played against.
“If I play and it’s a late game, then sleeping is always difficult. I remembered the game a lot in bed. It was so unique to us, the opponent felt elusive. To stand opposite to David Silva, that man has won everything. Has been world champion with Spain. I’m normally good at putting pressure on, but I felt that I couldn’t even take the ball.
“Before the match I saw the line-up, all those big names and I stood there. I thought: this is the reason why I once went to football.”
“I can play football against world stars. You want that, right? I’m a huge fan, as a child I watched everything on television. Around the club you also noticed that it had been going on for days. Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge last year was great, but this was different again, this is the best team I have ever played against.”
Now following the FA Cup clash, Sheffield Wednesday prepare to face Brentford in the Championship on Saturday. And it’s not because he’s just faced Manchester City that Pelupessy looks forward to these opponents. He says he actually loves playing against the Championship rivals.
“Now Brentford are waiting. It’s a very old and small stadium, they will play there for the last time this season. I love it, it’s so old and so beautiful. You can really notice the smell of p*** and beer there.”
Lovely.
