Burnley manager Vincent Kompany would be the ideal replacement for Roberto Martinez as Belgium manager following the Spaniard’s departure last night.

That’s according to Belgian politician Georges-Louis Bouchez, who believes the Burnley boss has all of the qualities that the national team requires.

Martinez resigned as Belgium boss last night following the country’s 0-0 draw with Croatia, a result that saw them fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Spaniard immediately confirmed his departure afterwards, bringing an end to a six year stay with the country and a 70-game spell that saw them finish third in the World Cup in 2018 and top the FIFA rankings.

The search for his replacement is now on and it remains to be seen what way Belgium will go, with Martinez only the second non-Belgian coach to hold the manager’s position since Geza Toldi held it in 1957/58.

Since then, only Dick Advocaat and Martinez have been non-Belgian nationals to hold the position so it is likely the next man in the position will come from there.

If that is the case, then Kompany is likely to be on the list given Burnley’s performance this season and Bouchez is certainly a fan.

“I will welcome it though if we appoint a compatriot who no longer has to adapt to our culture and mentality,” he wrote in Het Niuewsblad, relayed by Voetbalkrant.

“There are some names that could be considered like Philippe Clement or Frank Vercauteren, but one track that the Football Association should definitely explore is that of Vincent Kompany. For me, he is the right man to lead the Devils.

“He has already done that as captain and now that he has gained experience as a coach, he can do it again.

“With players working at Real Madrid and Manchester City, you need an inspirational figure by all accounts and Kompany is absolutely that. He also transcends community bickering, although that is usually just a theme in the press.”
