Midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin is ‘very close’ to signing for French side USL Dunkerque as he looks for his first club after leaving Everton in the summer.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who say the Ivorian is close to joining the French second tier side until the end of the season.

Gbamin has been without a club since the end of the summer transfer window, when he reached an agreement with Everton to terminate the final year of his deal.

That brought an end to a miserable time in England beset by injuries that limited him to just eight appearances for the Toffees.

He’s been linked with various clubs since the summer, with it reported that he was being eyed up in La Liga and even by former manager Rafa Benitez.

That never came to anything, though, and it appears he will instead be making his return in the second tier in France.

L’Equipe report that he is ‘expected to join Dunkerque’ until the end of the season, with the player ‘very close to committing’ to a deal.

According to their information the decision has been made to join the French side, who are currently 19th in Ligue 2, as he is keen to be closer to his family, who live near Lille.

Whether he can make a difference to Dunkerque’s fight against relegation remains to be seen but at this point, it’s likely he’d just be happy to get playing after the misery that was his time at Everton.
