Nico González came up through the ranks of Barcelona’s academy and made it to the first team at the start of this season. He has made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and registering two goals in the process.

The midfielder’s form has not gone unnoticed and has caught the attention of Manchester City.

Last month, Fichajes.net stated the 20-year-old is Pep Guardiola’s ‘wish’ and the manager ‘intends’ to sign him for the Citizens.

His contract, which includes a €500m release clause and ‘low’ wages, runs until 2024. That’s according to Marca, who explain there will be talks over offering an improved deal for the Spain U21 international, who has been ‘spectacular’ this term.

These discussions, however, will be held after Xavi Hernández’s side sort out renewals of others like Gavi and Ronald Araújo, because the Blaugrana are still having issues with their wage bill.

González, meanwhile, continues to draw attention from elsewhere, including the Premier League winners, who ‘want him’.

Guardiola’s side ‘closely followed’ the player since his father, Fran, worked for the Etihad club. City are one of the sides to have ‘already shown their willingness to take over his services’.

González’s priority is to continue at the Camp Nou. Barcelona’s financial issues means it will not be easy for them offer him a rise, when competing with other European top clubs like City.
