Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera is ‘waiting for Valencia’, but the Spanish club are yet to free up space in their squad to complete a deal.

The City midfielder has been linked with a move to the Mestalla for several weeks, with him being discussed as an option in the deal for Ferran Torres at one point.

That never happened as Peter Lim wanted to keep the transfers separate but reports at the time indicated that Valencia would sort out a deal for him once the Torres deal had been finalised.

That, though, hasn’t happened, with little information on the situation coming out since then. Indeed, it looked more likely that Herrera would return to Granada on loan from Manchester City than head to Valencia.

Super Deporte have now provided an update on the situation and say the midfielder is ‘waiting’ for Valencia to open up a space in their squad for him to join.

As he is classed as a ‘foreign’ player because he does not have an EU passport, Herrera would occupy one of the three ‘Non-EU spaces’ in Valencia’s squad.

These, though, are already filled, meaning the club has to move one of the current incumbents on or free up space via other means.

Their plan was to do this by getting Brazilian Gabriel Paulista a Spanish passport, but that process is still ongoing, and there is ‘uncertainty’ around the situation.

Thus Herrera has been left in limbo waiting to see if he can make the move from Manchester City, as Los Che are his preferred destination.

He can’t hold off forever though, and there are ‘several teams’, including Granada, who would be happy to take him should Valencia not be able to get a deal over the line.

That is something they can’t do unless they free up that Non-EU space, hence why they ‘continue drawing up’ alternative plans, such as Watford’s Etienne Capoue.
