Manchester United should probably attempt to buy a player from Benfica every transfer window, such is their scouting of the club in recent seasons.

The Premier league side have an official at nearly every Benfica match played and it’s been that way for around a year. Scouts were sent transfer planning in Lisbon before Jose Mourinho joined the club but it’s increased even more since the Portuguese coach arrived at Old Trafford.

It’s not just Benfica’s first team who Manchester United keep an eye on, they also watch the B side. In March it was reported that 18 year old attacker Joao Felix was a target for interest, and that United had been following him.

Back then, before his debut, O Jogo said Benfica wanted €40m from any club keen to build a deal for the much hyped youngster.

On Saturday evening, Joao Felix made his Lisbon derby debut and scored the equaliser for Benfica after Sporting had gone 1-0 ahead.

O Jogo report Manchester United had someone at the match, although they don’t claim to know who the club were watching.

The club have been linked to several players previously, including Benfica’s Ruben Dias and Andrija Zivkovic, but there was nothing strong.

Dias is a 21 year old central defender and Zivkovic is a 22 year old attacking midfielder, who can also play on either wing… yes, including the must frustrating (for Manchester United) right wing position.

Sporting’s best performer on Saturday night was arguably Luis Nani.

Do not be surprised to see Joao Felix to Manchester United links build over the next few months.
