For over a week, several reports have indicated Atlético Madrid could be a potential option for Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

Los Rojiblancos president Enrique Cerezo has publicly sat on the fence about the possibility of signing the 37-year-old.

The Manchester United star continues to be linked with a move to Atlético. Journalist Antón Meana has provided the reason for that to Cadena Ser’s El Larguero.

He claims the forward’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is ‘still very optimistic’ his client can arrive at the Metropolitano before the window closes.

Diego Simeone’s side continue to insist it is impossible for them to carry out the operation to sign the Portugal international. Meana adds the super-agent, on the other hand, insists if the issue is down to finances, then it can be fixed.

In order to help Atlético improve their economic conditions, Mendes ‘would not look badly’ at assisting the club to find Antoine Griezmann and Saúl Ñíguez new homes this summer.

“Until Atleti say that it is impossible no matter what happens, they [Mendes] will continue working,” says Meana.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is still absent from Manchester United’s pre-season preparations as he deals with a personal issue.
