Liverpool director Michael Edwards is eyeing a move to Real Madrid, but that is unlikely to happen at this moment in time.

That’s according to El Español, who say the Spanish club are ‘not considering’ hiring anyone in that position at this moment in time.

A report in England yesterday hinted that Madrid were eyeing up a move for Edwards, who is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season following a highly successful decade at Anfield.

The report was somewhat backed up by claims in Spain, which indicated there had been contact between Madrid and Edwards, but it was the latter who was pushing for the move more than the Spanish giants.

El Español pick up on that and say Edwards is ‘waiting’ for Los Blancos, but they are not ‘considering hiring anyone’ in that position.

The club’s general management believes that the management is ‘more than under control’, and there’s no need for someone in that position given they are in a ‘favourable’ position to sign the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé in the summer.

That stance is one that Florentino Perez has held since 2016 when he made it clear that Madrid don’t need a sporting director.

So while it is true that Edwards is ‘still keen’ on a new job and wants to take on ‘new challenges’ after his time in Liverpool, the chances of him joining Madrid ‘are slim’, even if his work on Merseyside is ‘highly valued’, where he has set the bar ‘very high’.

That’s unlikely to put an end to rumours for the time being, and the reports are still conflicting, but the stance from Spain is very much that the interest is coming from Edwards rather than Madrid.
