When Manchester United were trailing to Villarreal 1-0 at Old Trafford last night, with so many attacking options on the pitch, it was hard to expect Alex Telles to be the one to equalise things.

It was in a surprising play from a free-kick, Bruno Fernandes chose to put the ball at the edge of the box for the Brazilian to hit an amazing shot.

That was Alex Telles’ first goal for Manchester United, and the player couldn’t hide his happiness when interviewed by TNT Sports. Speaking to reporter Fred Caldeira, he explained how the goal happened.

“Bruno and I have a good relationship,” Alex Telles told TNT Sports.

“First, I was supposed to hit that ball straightaway, but we talked, Bruno and I. And he told me to stay at the edge of the box he was going to play there, catch everyone off guard. And then there’s confidence, training, and being fortunate, catching the ball well and scoring the goal.”

Asked if they had trained that play or if it was something planned at the time of the free-kick, Telles says it all happened because of their good communication.

“As I said, Bruno and I have a good relationship, even for the language, too. It makes it much easier. He told me to go to the edge to the box that he was going to put it up for me to shoot. And everyone knows that I really like getting to that ball to shoot from outside. I’ve already scored some goals like that. So it’s about taking advantage of the quality, believe and be happy.”

Telles last night had his first appearance by Cristiano Ronaldo’s side. He’s revealed that the Portuguese star was frustrated for not having many chances until the end of the game, but that’s when everything changed for him and for the team.

“So, first time I play with him. Off the pitch, we already have this closer relationship because we speak Portuguese. And five minutes before he was a little upset that we didn’t get any balls to him. I said ‘it will arrive, it will arrive, stay concentrated because it will arrive’. And as soon as I left… Ronaldo doesn’t need much, right? We know his quality, we see it on a daily basis. So it only took one ball in the box and he gave us the victory. It’s a dream.”
