Lille president Gerard Lopez has granted an interview to RMC Sport, to talk about the messy Nicolas Pepe situation.

The attacker was expected to leave this summer for a huge amount, and it feels like there’s been attempts to create an auction.

Attempts similar to what happened with Lyon and Tanguy Ndombele. And attempts which haven’t quite worked yet.

Several clubs have been linked, and French claims of big offers from Inter Milan caused a lot of fuss… but they certainly weren’t strongly backed up in the Italian media.

Considering Inter are scraping around to be able to afford Romelu Lukaku, the idea of them offering €90m for Pepe didn’t really sit very well.

Lopez has confirmed Liverpool talks with the player directly, rather than with the Ligue 1 club.

RMC quote him as saying: “I know there have been discussions with the player, not with us as a club, Liverpool has players in those positions, and I read that maybe there was players who leave, or not. I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.”

This doesn’t sound like Jurgen Klopp’s club going behind Lille’s back, because they’re open for a sale and Pepe’s agents have likely been encouraged to speak to interested clubs.
