It’s rare for a transfer saga to get so dramatic with more than a month left of the window, but Maxi Gomez rumours are a little crazy today.

West Ham were apparently spurred into action on Thursday, as it was reported in Spain Celta Vigo and Valencia had reached an agreement for the Uruguayan striker.

Celta’s local media reported on Friday morning that Hammers representatives had landed in Vigo by private jet. They wanted to talk to the club, but Celta were happy with the Valencia deal, as it would see them get two players ready to start preseason training.

Then followed claims West Ham would have to pay the player’s €50m clause and hope Gomez would decide to join them.

Super Deporte, local to Valencia, started claiming problems with Gomez’s agent could kill the deal, with it being stated Jonathan Barnett had asked Valencia to match the commission he’d have received from West Ham.

Then the same newspaper claimed optimism had dropped at Los Ches, and grown at the London club where they were planning a medical for this weekend.

That article was published just over 2 hours ago (16:34 UK time).

Since then, ElDesmarque Valencia have published their own, saying there’s been no further movement from West Ham in the past hour. They sound confident on behalf of Valencia and explain Celta have asked their player if he wants to take the extra money from England and he ‘dismissed the option’.

It’s explained West Ham ‘will not achieve their objective’, and that the Hammers know the two reasons why.

Gomez is happy with his lifestyle in Spain and has no language issues.

The second reason is that the sporting project in Valencia is ‘incomparable’ to that on offer in London, mainly due to Champions League football.

This is all clearly written from a Los Ches slant, so West Ham fans may be able to cling to the hope it’s biased.

At this stage, we wouldn’t rule a thing out with this transfer.
