Today, we witnessed the birth and the death of a wonderful transfer rumour in the space of about four hours, and it was glorious.

Early on Friday morning, questions were asked about Pep Guardiola’s decision to leave out Sergio Agüero and Vincent Kompany from Manchester City’s starting XI against Barcelona.

Newspapers thought this might be the beginning of the end for the pair, and some witty headlines were written.

In turn, Calciomercato.it got extremely giddy at the news that Vincent Company might be available soon, and immediately linked him with Inter Milan.

Claiming the player would be an ‘excellent’ option for the Serie A side (you don’t say?), the Italian website even speculated it all rested on how fit the player would be in January.

A couple of hours later, Pep Guardiola waltzed into his Friday press conference and immediately killed every single story with one simple sentence: “Vincent and Sergio’s futures are at Manchester City”.

That didn’t last very long.

It seems Inter Milan might have to look elsewhere for a new defender.
