Signing Amadou Onana from Lille for a fee potentially reaching €40m, Everton got the midfielder they wanted, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to also get Idrissa Gueye.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder knows Goodison Park well, as he excelled there for three years before his big move to France, which is partly why Frank Lampard will be interested in bringing him back.

Negotiations to get a move sorted, however, have been a bit trickier than first anticipated, with the player not overly sure about a move back to Merseyside.

When we last left this story, it was said the Toffees had stopped talks to sign the 32-year-old for the time being, but they haven’t given up fully.

L’Equipe on Tuesday that ‘negotiations with Everton should take off again after a few days of silence’ between the two clubs.

That means Lampard is still pushing for the Senegal international to make the switch to Goodison Park, clearly worried about his team’s start to the season, which consists of picking up one point from a possible nine.

Whether Everton get their man remains to be seen, but at least they are going to give it another shot with just over one week left in the transfer window.
