There seems to be a real will among some Manchester United fans that Chelsea have got Alvaro Morata for less than what Real Madrid would have allowed him to move to Old Trafford for.

That would present a situation in which Manchester United were being somewhat played with by Real Madrid, perhaps connected to the David De Gea failed transfer, and could never have got Morata to Old Trafford anyway.

Therefore it was undoubtedly the right decision to sign Romelu Lukaku, and there need be no comparisons or soul searching, because Manchester United were never going to be allowed to sign Morata.

Despite that, claims Chelsea paid as little as €65m threaten to turn that situation on its head.

The last Real Madrid asking price, according to Spanish reports on the morning Manchester United dumped the deal, was €80m. Madrid had come down and the English club had gone up to €75m, there was real optimism a deal was within touching distance, and could even be completed that day.

Of course it wasn’t, and on Wednesday Marca came up with the news that Chelsea had agreed an €80m fee to buy Morata, the same as what Manchester United were asked for. On Thursday, Marca say the figure is €80m plus a further €5m in variables.

‘The Morata exit leaves €80m in the coffers of Real Madrid but also a void in the squad’, explain the Spanish newspaper.

Of the €5m, there’s no explanation how that adds up from Marca, but they’re clear the €80m is guaranteed.

El Confidencial, often very reliable on Real Madrid exits, but strangely quiet this summer, report the fee as just over €80m.

AS agree with Marca and say the fee is €80m plus a further €5m payable in variables. Those variables are slightly elaborated on, with AS saying it’s dependent on games played and titles won.

Chelsea appear to be leaking claims the fee was much less, but, right now, €80m + €5m is the consensus in the Madrid sport press.

€80m is just a smidgin (well, £770k, but that’s just coppers, right?) over £70m.
