Spanish side Cádiz have made a last-ditch effort to sign midfielder Jonathan Varane and beat Norwich City to his signature.

That’s according to Diario de Cádiz, who say the midfielder with the ‘illustrious surname’ has emerged as an option late in the window.

He’s currently playing for Sporting de Gijón after arriving from Lens in August 2022, originally joining the reserve team but making a name for himself in the first team and earning himself admirers.

Norwich City are one of them and have put an offer worth €2.5m on the table to try and tempt them into a sale. QPR have also been in contact but only offered a loan with an option to buy.

Cádiz have now made their move as they try to desperately add to their squad to help them avoid relegation to the second division in Spain.

At the moment it is seen as unlikely that they will win the race given the competition for Varane’s signature, particularly from Norwich City, who have already put their bid on the table to try and get a deal done.

Nothing is ruled out at this point, but it appears the Canaries are in front, with Cádiz scrambling to try and work something out to ensure they don’t miss out.
