The English transfer window is now closed, but that doesn’t mean an end to the links to Bruno Fernandes.

The Sporting midfielder was one of the stories of the transfer window as he was continually linked with a move to the Premier League following his superb season.

Manchester United and Tottenham were the two clubs most heavily linked with the Portugal star, and it seems Spurs made a last-ditch bid for the midfielder.

Daniel Levy was scrambling around Europe trying to find a midfielder for Mauricio Pochettino after (at that stage) failing to get Giovani Lo Celso, and Fernandes was someone he targeted once again.

We covered the reports from around Portugal about Spurs late push but Record weren’t part of that.

That’s now changed, with the newspaper offering their insight into the goings on, and they present a different story than O Jogo.

They say the bid was not enough to persuade Sporting into a sale and that was because of the way Tottenham wanted to pay.

They offered €45m upfront and then another €25m in add-ons if certain factors were met. They felt that matched Sporting’s €70m asking price.

However, Spurs were only offering that extra €25m if they won the Premier League and Champions League. There’s no explanation of whether that meant they would pay €25m if they won both or €12.5m for winning each competition.

Sporting rejected it as they wanted €60m upfront and knew Spurs were trying to get around paying that price.

The path to the Premier League was then closed for Bruno, and he is now left looking around Europe trying to secure a move elsewhere instead.
