West Ham United defender Thilo Kehrer is set for a strong second half of the season, after completing a loan move to Monaco.

That’s according to former PSG defender Alain Goma, who has backed the German to bounce back and potentially make it into Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for Euro 2024.

Kehrer returned to Ligue 1 earlier this month, securing a loan move to Monaco until the end of the season after falling down the pecking order at West Ham this season.

He was a regular for the Hammers after joining from PSG in August 2022 but found himself out of the picture at the London Stadium and thus sought out a move this month.

His hope is that he can be a regular for Monaco between now and the end of the season to put himself back in the picture for Germany, who are set to host Euro 2024 in the summer.

The defender has 27 appearances for his country after making is debut in September 2018 but hasn’t featured for them since June last year when he managed 90 minutes in a friendly against Poland.

He hasn’t made a squad since then, but Goma believes that could turn around if things go to plan back in Ligue 1.

“Of course, Kehrer’s greatest strength is that he can be used flexibly in defense,” he told Sport 1.

“The fact that the pressure in the Principality is significantly lower than in Paris should also make it easier for him to exploit his potential. I firmly believe in that, and he can play a key role in Monaco.

“Kehrer brings a lot of experience that should make Monaco even stronger. This team seemed too naive to me in some scenes in the first half of the season, but with a bit more routine, Monaco can finish the season in the top three, among other things by loaning Kehrer.”
