Barcelona technical secretary Eric Abidal’s comments on players not working hard under Ernesto Valverde didn’t go down well with Lionel Messi as the Argentina took to social media to hit back at his former teammate.
On February 6th, Sport reported Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu had a conversation with Messi and Abidal on Wednesday and his intervention helped resolve any potential conflicts between the pair.
Ever since the saga broke out earlier this week, there have been reports of Messi possibly leaving Camp Nou in the summer. Even though his current deal expires in 2021, the Ballon d’Or winner can leave the La Liga winners as a free agent after this season.
The Spanish champions were knocked out of the Copa del Rey following a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Club Bilbao on Thursday.
After the loss, Barcelona director of institutional and sporting relations Guillermo Amor spoke about the Messi-Abidal saga, and urged the club to be more united going forward.
“The feeling is that yesterday the president spoke with Leo and Eric and that everything was solved internally, and that we are all to work and be united. Especially when things go wrong you have to be united,” Marca quoted Amor as saying.
“No one is above the club, and together we get things moving forward. Everything was clarified. We have other competitions, we have La Liga and the Champions League. We are in it and are looking forward, as a team. And not looking for problems.”
