One thing was pretty certain after Trent Alexander-Arnold announced on Monday that he’d be leaving Liverpool, with the open-secret of his move to Real Madrid known for months.
That is the media closest to Barcelona would absolutely claim the Blaugrana had the chance to sign the England international but decided against the opportunity. This is something they can’t help themselves from doing with almost every player who agrees to join Real Madrid.
El Clásico’s version of a a little childish snipe to say they’re not bothered.
And sure enough, within 24 hours of the announcement, Catalonia based and certainly Barcelona-leaning Diario Sport have claimed their local club could have signed the Liverpool player but didn’t really want to, along with the inevitable insinuation he’s only going to Real Madrid for money anyway.
In an article in their Monday edition, which claims Hansi Flick wants Denzel Dumfries, it’s stated: ‘He was also offered to Barça, but it came too late and they didn’t want to compete with the multi-million-dollar fee the club has put on the table. It wasn’t worth it.’
Whether that’s true or not is in the eye of the beholder, but one thing is certain… it would have eventually been claimed in the Catalan media anyway, regardless of whether it happened or not.
This is a media dynamic Trent Alexander-Arnold will have to get used to.
