Aston Villa want to hire Sevilla director of football Monchi as their sporting director after missing out on Barcelona’s Mateu Alemany.

That’s according to Marca journalist José Félix Díaz, who says Unai Emery ‘intends to have’ Monchi alongside him at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have been keen to hire a director of football to work alongside the Spanish manager for several months as they plan their ambitious future under his leadership.

They appeared to have wrapped up a deal for Barcelona chief Alemany last month by offering him ambitious wages and money to spend on the squad and at one point he was on the move to Birmingham.

However, a change of circumstances at the Nou Camp led him to reverse that decision and instead remain where he was at Barcelona.

That left Aston Villa restarting their search for someone to fill the Director of Football position and it seems they have settled on Sevilla chief Monchi.

Díaz reports that Aston Villa ‘want’ him at the club and manager Emery ‘intends to have’ his former colleague alongside him once again.

He knows Monchi well, having worked alongside him for years during his own time at Sevilla, where they won several Europa League titles, competed at the top end of La Liga and were regarded as one of the smartest clubs in Europe when it came to transfers.

It now seems Aston Villa want to reunite the pair in the Midlands as they plan their own assault on the Premier League and Europe in the coming years.
