Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has admitted that they’ve been “hitting the goalposts” in recent years, but is confident success is on the way, nonetheless.
GE Globo have an interview with the Brazilian forward today after he hit 200 games for Arsenal in the recent draw with Brentford.
The 23-year-old has been a regular for the Gunners since arriving in July 2019, enjoying the confidence of Mikel Arteta and repaying that with the expected development into a first team star.
Like Arsenal, he continues to grow under Arteta’s leadership but is yet to really taste the success he or the club would want from that growth.
This season could be another one of frustration for them as they chase Liverpool at the top of the table, with the Reds currently six points clear with a game in hand over the Gunners.
That’s a point of disappointment for Arsenal given this year could be their opportunity as Manchester City have fallen off and currently sit sixth in the table.
Martinelli is aware of that and admits Arsenal have hit the goalposts in recent years, when they’ve secured back-to-back second placed finishes.
“We have been fighting for titles for a few years, hitting the goalposts, but knowing that it is a process and that we are on the right path,” he said.
“Always being among the first placed is important, because at some point the achievement comes. This will be another year of the Premier League being played until the end, and we will try to maintain the pace to win the title.
“That’s one of our goals. A club the size of Arsenal has to enter every tournament aiming to be champion. We are experiencing a good moment in the season, with important results and maintaining the team’s identity in the games. It’s about thinking game by game to keep evolving.”
