Fresh comments to the German media saw Danny Röhl’s situation come to a head on Wednesday after weeks of the Sheffield Wednesday manager being linked with an exit from the Championship side.
He’s had his name mentioned alongside clubs relegated from the Premier League, a couple still in it but without vacancies, and a couple of German clubs. It appears to be RB Leipzig who he’s really set his heart on, though, hence him giving that bombshell interview to RB Live.
Röhl has also spoken to Kicker for a lengthy podcast. The German football magazine released some brief quotes from that podcast on Thursday morning, and as part of the article they stated the manager has reached an agreement with Sheffield Wednesday executives so he can leave this summer.
However – they didn’t directly produce a quote on that.
Well, having gone deep into over a hour of the Kicker podcast, we’ve found it for you.
The 36-year-old said: “Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future. And the Bundesliga is, of course, a consideration. And yet, I also know that getting the final nod requires good work, the right people who believe in you, and timing. And if all of that comes together, I might have the chance to return to the Bundesliga in the summer, or to return to the Bundesliga right away. But it could go in a completely different direction.
“My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now.”
Sheffield Wednesday may now feel it’s time to produce full clarity on this for their fans. Currently they have their manager springing from interview to interview in Germany, talking like he’s a free agent and has left the Owls behind him.
That surely cannot be allowed to continue.
