When the Spanish press reported Iker Casillas’ possible move to Liverpool on Tuesday, we really thought the Portuguese media would be making a big noise about it today.

But the papers were really quiet about it, not giving the story any attention. Only a couple of websites have covered the rumour, with A Bola being the one to give it a bit of insight.

In case you haven’t read yesterday’s news, it claimed that Casillas’ decision was made right after Porto’s match against Liverpool. He reportedly spoke to Jurgen Klopp, and decided he would be moving to Anfield once his contract with the Dragons was finished at the end of the season.

A Bola find its very strange, because the Porto president Pinto da Costa would have decided to renew Casillas’ contract exactly after this match. So someone was terribly wrong when making these assumptions.

However, they also have a pretty good reason why Casillas could be leaving Porto for Liverpool, and that’s his salary. The goalkeeper reportedly makes €7.5m gross per season in Portugal, and has already been told by the Dragons that he would have to accept a pay cut to stay at the club.

A Bola makes it clear the situation at Liverpool is different, since the Reds could easily afford this salary. So that’s something that would make sense for Casillas both financially and sportingly.

With reliable outlets still to confirm this story, we better wait a bit more before buying it.
