“Jota already is king in the Championship”.
That’s how Portuguese newspaper O Jogo labels the Wolverhampton striker today, after he won the PFA monthly award.
They say the player ‘has already conquered the fans of English football’ after his great start for the Wolves, in a story which, despite being true, obviously is a bit of an exaggeration.
But the Portuguese press is always happy to see its own players doing well abroad, so there’s no big reason to criticise that.
The interesting part is the certainty in which they state the player has already been good enough to convince the Wolves to buy him permanently as soon as possible.They claim the Championship club will be trying to make his transfer in the January market, in a similar situation to what happened when they signed Helder Costa from Benfica on a €15m deal this year.
Now they would do the same with Jota, who would cost only €8m as previously set during his loan arrival from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Thing is that they don’t give credits to Express and Star, who published the original story this week and had it widely covered in Portugal since then.
So by not making it clear if their info is exclusive or not, it makes it difficult to know if they’re confirming a story or just taking another chance to cover it because of the player’s award.
But if we had to guess, we would go for the second option.
