Whether it is at international level or with their club, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are always together.

Two of the best defenders in the Premier League when fully fit, the Tottenham pair also get to play together for Belgium, and for the former of the two, their partnership would have to continue if they changed clubs.

Speaking to Het Belong Van Limburg ahead of his country’s World Cup qualifier against Bosnia on Saturday, the 28-year-old said with a smile: “Throughout the years, we have grown together and become really good friends. I can hardly play without him. If I ever go to another club, he’ll have to come with me”.

Once again in the headlines, scoring England’s winning goal on Thursday evening against Slovenia, Alderweireld’s other teammate, Harry Kane, is currently in one of his best purple spells yet, and for the centre-back, there isn’t anyone better in the league.

He said: “I’m naturally biased because I work with him everyday, but I would not want to swap him for another striker. I see how he trains and how he lives for this sport. He wants to be the best in the world.

“He is strong, uses his body and has a good game in the air. In addition, he is also clever and works for the rest of the team. Often you will see players with one of these elements missing. Kane has it all”.

As for whether or not he’s better than his national teammate Romelu Lukaku, Alderweireld didn’t want to particularly enter that debate, merely saying the two were ‘in the same bracket’, but couldn’t compare the two as he didn’t train with the Manchester United forward on a daily basis.

We hope that fence is comfortable, Toby.
