After completing two seasons in the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Denis Zakaria has caught the attention of other clubs, claims Bild.
Manchester United get a mention and the German publication claims the Red Devils are one of those to have ‘already expressed interest’ in the midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are also interested in the 22-year-old, but the report doesn’t specify which club is ahead in the transfer race as of now.
The Switzerland international’s current deal runs down in 2022 and Mönchengladbach are looking to raise around €50m from his sale after the end of this campaign. They are dreaming of achieving a club-record fee from the player’s transfer.
Their sporting director Max Eberl has already admitted it would be difficult for the club to retain him, if they receive an exciting proposal for Zakaria.
“We are extremely satisfied with Denis’ development and plan with him in the long term. Gladbach is and remains a club that relies on transfer fees. Of course, when we receive unrealistic offers, we have to deal with them,” Eberl said.
Dieter Hecking largely used Zakaria as a central midfielder last season, but he has returned to his preferred position as a defensive midfielder under new manager Marco Rose.
If Manchester United end up signing Zakaria, he could replace Nemanja Matić at Old Trafford.
