Drawing 2-2 with Manchester United isn’t usually the type of result which sees a manager sacked, but things aren’t so simple right now.

Jose Mourinho’s team are on a prolonged wobble, and quickly went 2-0 down to Mark Hughes’ side at the weekend. At that point it looked like Saints could push further but then it was all quickly on its head again after two goals saw the Manchester club back on level terms.

Southampton are in the relegation zone and the club obviously thought it better to act sooner rather than later.

Interestingly, after the match Calciomercato.it reported Paulo Sousa remains a contender to take over at the Premier League club. It’s intriguing because it was them who first pushed it a week ago, claiming contact had been made with the former Fiorentina boss.

A few days after the original claim, it was reported in Portugal that Sousa has been waiting to take a job in England, already turning down other approaches as he waits for the Premier League.

Now he has his chance.

Favourite with the bookies right now is Quique Sanchez Flores, but it’s worth pointing out there’s absolutely nothing being reported in Spain on that right now.
