West Ham United are open to letting Edson Álvarez move elsewhere this summer, after his Hammers career somewhat drifted.
The Mexico international will return to West Ham, after a season on loan on Fenerbahçe.
He’s attracting interest from his country while the midfielder’s firm desire is to continue in Europe.
Three days ago, Sport Witness covered claims Germany that he wants to leave West Ham immediately. He has an option of joining 1. FC Köln, who are now showing interest.
The Bundesliga side are well aware the operation is complex but are working on securing Álvarez’s services.
Loan deal for West Ham desired
Sky Deutschland now picks up that and covers the latest on 1. FC Köln’s pursuit of the 28-year-old.
Their intention is to sign him on loan and are working on finding an agreement with both the player and West Ham United.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are open to parting ways with Edson Álvarez and will have ‘no issues’ to agree terms with Köln. The player has done his own research about Köln and is impressed by their stadium, fans and the city.
However, the problem lies with his wages and competition from Turkey. The former Ajax man’s salary is an issue to agree on personal terms.
Optimism of signing West Ham player
The German club are trying to convince the player, who wants to leave the Hammers this summer.
Express.de relay Sky’s claim and then shares their own updates. He earns €6m per year at West Ham United and therefore, 1. FC Köln have to ‘stretch themselves considerably’ to sign him.
The German club maintain optimism to get the signing over the line because of the two trump cards.
West Ham are in the Championship and Edson Álvarez has no intention of playing in the second division. The London club signed him from Ajax in August 2023, when Tim Steidten was their technical director. He convinced the Mexican to join the Hammers.
Steidten left West Ham in 2025 and joined Köln in March, and he could again convince Álvarez to join his current club. These are the two trump cards.
There’s a deal to be done for Köln, provided they can convince the player, as it’s not an issue to find an agreement with Nuno’s side.
Edson Álvarez transfer situation
- The Mexico midfielder has a West Ham contract lasting until 2028
- His Transfermarkt value is now €15m – Down from a height of €35m
- Another loan doesn’t look great for Hammers
- Álvarez would return with a single year of contract
