Como take on Manchester United later today in what will be a historic Champions League tie for the Italian side. Some updates about the game are now emerging from Italy.

Cesc Fabregas’ side come into the tie after an impressive win over Fiorentina and find themselves fifth in Serie A.

This is in stark contrast to how things have been going at Manchester United, who have no wins in five games in all competitions. An element of a media circus is sneaking back in, and fitness issues are piling just to increase the levels of stress further.

During his pre-match press conference, Michael Carrick was asked about worry around the weather, after a severe warning was issued for rain.

The manager batted it away, suggesting they’re used to playing in the rain. However, there’s been suggestions, mainly in the English media, that there’s a possibility of the match being suspended.

Confidence in Italy about tie

Tuttomercatoweb note that the Servizio Meteorologico Nazionale dell’Aeronautica Militare issued an orange alert for today, for the area around Lake Como. This has been the key reason behind suggestions that the game could be postponed.

The Lombardy region has already experienced heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours and that’s expected to continue until this evening. Thunderstorms are also forecast and there’s a danger of landslides.

TMW explain their sources have said there’s confidence it will be played on time. There’ll be a real eagerness around Como for the match to go ahead.

Local newspaper La Provincia di Como are showing no concern of a postponement at this stage. Their main focus has been on a Red Wave of arriving Manchester United supporters. It all appears quite welcoming, although their major story right now is of a brawl between visiting fans in Piazza Volta on Tuesday evening.

What happens if the game is postponed?

There have been odd instances in the past of Champions League games being postponed due to various reasons. In some cases, they’ve had to be stopped and replayed from the same time at another date.

Article 27.01 of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League regulations says the full match or remaining minutes are “as a rule, played the next day”.

Thankfully, the weather tomorrow is forecast to be almost wall-to-wall sunshine.

Como will be desperate to play

Ahead of the season, there were doubts about whether Como would be able to play Champions League matches at Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The lakeside club had played Serie C football at the venue as recently as 2020 and the infrastructure hadn’t changed much since then.

This made the Sinigaglia fall into UEFA Category 4 standards. However, the club’s ambitious ownership had a 90-day refurbishment plan in place that changed the situation entirely. That said, it’s still largely uncovered and very much open to the elements.

And the game against Manchester United would be Como’s second home game in Europe and much bigger than the first one. It would stand as a defining feat for a club that was nowhere to be found at the highest level six years ago.
